Our Team

Please remember that there are many others working behind the scenes who all help to keep our surgery running smoothly.

Dr David Warren

Dave is one of the proprietors of Mira Mar Veterinary Hospital.  He came to Albany from Perth in 2008 with his partner and 2 children to begin a new career as a mixed practice vet, and hasn't left!  Dave spent many years in the workforce prior to becoming a veterinarian, and so brings with him a multitude of life skills. His pet family currently includes Caleb the Golden Retriever, a rat, many chickens and many fish!

Dr Jim Darmody

Jim is the other proprietor of Mira Mar Veterinary Hospital. Jim is very experienced in all aspects of mixed veterinary practice having worked throughout Australia and the UK. His career commenced here in Albany in 1999, before he moved back in 2007 with his family for the country lifestyle. Jim's wife Renae is also a vet, and they have 3 children, two nutter Labrador dogs and some chickens!

Dr Renae Darmody

Renae (who is also Jim's wife) has been working back at the clinic for 2 - 3 days each week since 2011, initially as a break from raising a young family!  She is an experienced small animal clinician with some horse background.  She also has a special interest in small animal ultrasound.  Outside of work she is busy with 3 kids, and trying to train her crazy Labradors!

Dr Jialin Tan

Jialin is a welcome addition to the veterinarian side of the team, joining us at the end of 2017 as a locum, and then staying on board permanently!  Jialin moved to Albany from Townsville with her husband and two children. She brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge in the small animal field, with anaesthesia, emergency medicine and pet behaviour as some of her areas of interest. She is the proud owner of Eric, a Kelpie X, and also has a beehive!  We are sure you and your pet will enjoy meeting her.

Dr Erin Macdonald

Erin is an ex-Albany girl who has returned home in late 2013 to take up a position at Mira Mar Vets. Erin has previously worked in Kalgoorlie and has an interest in horse work. She has a very calm and gentle approach, and a methodical and experienced way of dealing with cases. Erin is 'owned' by Shaun the Maltese X and Georgie the Kelpie X, plus chickens and other assorted creatures on their property! Erin has started back with us one day per week after the birth of her second baby in August 2019. We love having her back at the clinic for her 'baby-free time', and we are sure your pets will too!

Ellie Hummerston (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

Ellie joined the Mira Mar Vets team in early 2018, returning to Albany after an exciting career in a number of busy vet practices in Sydney. Ellie is a dedicated and experienced veterinary nurse. In 2019, Ellie completed extra qualifications in Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, meaning she can provide qualified teaching of trainee veterinary nurses, which is a real asset to the trainees within our team.  Ellie's fur-child is the adorable Summer, a Cattle Dog X who features in the tooth brushing video on our website!

Sharon Cliffe (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

Sharon is the newest team member to join our veterinary nursing staff, commencing in 2021. She moved to Albany from Port Hedland, and is a mum of two kids, as well as a pet mum of a whole menagerie at home including 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 horse, 2 sheep, 2 goats and about 50 chickens! We are sure you will love her friendly and welcoming approach, and your pets will love her caring and professional manner.

Caitlin Williams (Trainee Veterinary Nurse)

Caitlin has been a part of our MMVH family since she was in high school - she spent the last two years of her high schooling with us, not only doing work placement but also managing to complete two certificates in Animal Studies over this time. As soon as she graduated from high school, we snapped her up to train her for her Certificate IV in Vet Nursing. She has three beautiful cats at home to keep her busy when she is not studying or working. We are loving having Caitlin as a part of our team and we look forward to seeing her grow within the industry.

Jodie Burke (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

Those eagle-eyed clients may recognise Jodie from some years ago, she originally worked at MMVH in 2010 before taking a long break away to raise her three young children. Jodie is now back with us in a casual capacity and enjoying the break from family life. Outside of work, Jodie has five dogs to look after and a fairly constant stream of puppies! We are thrilled to welcome Jodie back to the MMVH team.

Penny Laycock (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

Penny is part of our casual veterinary nursing team.  A very experienced small animal nurse and qualified vet nursing trainer, Penny is also a mum of two children, three cats and a dog!

Emma Fairley (Registered Veterinary Nurse)

Emma joined our staff in 2016 as a return to work part-time while raising her two daughters. She qualified as a Vet Nurse in 1995, and has had a varied career; working in both NSW and WA as a vet nurse, but more recently as a human paramedic in Albany. Emma also has a zoology degree and an obvious passion for wildlife rehabilitation - she can often be seen at the clinic with a fledgling bird to feed! Emma and her family look after Angus (the best cat), 3 gorgeous guinea pigs and a pet budgie.  Emma is part of our casual vet nursing team, and she is also fitting in pet sitting and dog walking into her spare time!

Amanda Poett (Administration)

Amanda became the practice's book-keeper in July 2013. Amanda has previously been a veterinary nurse (and still works the occasional reception shift!); and besides helping to run her family's own business, she is also completing further studies in the book-keeping field.

Important COVID information

To all of our wonderful clients, We felt it appropriate to communicate with you at this time and let you know what steps Mira Mar Veterinary Hospital is taking to ensure your safety, along with your pets'. We are following state government mandates, which classify Veterinary Hospitals as essential services.  We ask that you not attend the hospital if you are sick or required to be in quarantine.  Alternative arrangements can be made by calling the hospital on 9841 5422. If you do attend, please:
  • Wear a mask (ensuring your nose and mouth are covered)
  • Sign in via QR code / hard copy
  • Assist us with trying to social distance
  • Use contactless payment methods where possible
  • Avoid crowding the front counter
Currently the hospital is very busy and, like all businesses, is sometimes short staffed.  We are doing our absolute best to attend to everyone’s needs now and into 2022.  Currently bookings and procedures are running as normal; however, it may be that at some stage in the future our clinical load will be limited by staff availability.  We will triage urgent cases, but elective appointments and procedures may need to change at short notice.  This will be communicated very clearly, and we ask for your understanding.  It is not a step we will take lightly or without good reason. Unfortunately we have also been affected by supply chain issues for some items of medication and prescription foods.  We are working hard with our wholesaler to keep our hospital sufficiently stocked with either the product you need or a viable alternative, but many of the shortages are out of our control. Thank you for your ongoing support.  We recognise this is a challenging time, but we are facing it together, and we will endeavour to support you and your pets to the best of our ability.  Feel free to contact us to discuss any of the above. Sincerely, The team at Mira Mar Vets
